Natasha’s Law, formally part of The Food Information (Scotland) Amendment Regulations 2021 or The Food Information (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2019, came into effect on 1 October 2021. It was introduced following the tragic death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who suffered a fatal allergic reaction to undeclared sesame in a pre-packaged baguette. The law requires that all pre-packed for direct sale (PPDS) foods clearly display full ingredient lists, with allergens emphasised (e.g., in bold).
Key requirements of Natasha’s Law include:
- Clearly listing all ingredients for PPDS foods.
- Highlighting any of the 14 major allergens (such as peanuts, gluten, milk, and sesame) in a way that is easily readable.
- Ensuring allergen information is accurate, visible, and accessible to customers before purchase.
Compliance with these requirements is essential for protecting customers, reducing the risk of allergic reactions, and avoiding potential legal penalties.
Our Highfield Introduction to Allergens course covers Natasha’s Law. The course gives food handlers and business owners the knowledge to identify allergens, understand labelling requirements, and implement safe practices in line with current legislation.
